100th Anniversary of Count Zeppelin’s Death

Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin died 100 years ago today, on March 8, 1917.

In good health despite his 78 years, Zeppelin had traveled to Berlin to attend an aeronautical exhibition in February, 1917. He developed appendicitis in late February and was operated on successfully but developed pneumonia and died in Berlin on March 8.

World War I was still raging and Zeppelin was regarded by the public as a national hero; he was given an state funeral with full honors.

His tombstone bears the words of Jesus: “Dein Glaube hat dir geholfen” (“Your faith has saved you”).

100 years after Count Zeppelin’s death, his legacy still lives.

The video’s uploader calls it “Best Color Footage,” but of course this is black & white film that has been colorized.)

The people at British Pathé kindly send us a DM on Twitter (@Airships) about airship newsreels they have posted. We will be sharing them periodically on the blog.

Today’s selection are two films of the U.S. Navy airship ZRS-4 Akron, showing her operation as an airborne aircraft carrier and her tragic crash.

Film of U.S.S. Akron Accident on February 22, 1932 [Video]

Film of the U.S.S. Akron’s accident at Lakehurst in front of a congressional delegation on February 22, 1932. The cables connecting the ship’s tail to the stern beam failed in a 14 kt wind that also caused the ship to list.

Interview with Ernst Lehmann aboard the Hindenburg [Video]

A brief interview with Ernst Lehmann in the Writing Room of the Hindenburg, filmed before the ship’s May 21, 1936 departure from Lakehurst.

Captain Lehmann began his airship training in 1913 under Hugo Eckener. His first command was the DELAG passenger ship LZ-17 Sachsen and he had a distinguished career as a wartime Zeppelin commander and with the airships LZ-127 Graf Zeppelin and LZ-129 Hindenburg.

Lehmann was killed when the Hindenburg burned at Lakehurst on May 6, 1937, a year after this film was made.
