Werner, Walter, and their mother survived the crash; Werner’s father and sister did not.

The Doehner family was returning to their home Mexico, where Hermann Doehner was general manager of a German wholesale drug company headquartered in Mexico City. Werner’s older brothers Kurt and Hermann Jr. were not aboard the airship.

Werner Doehner was born on March 14, 1929 in Darmstadt, Germany.

Other new facts and information have also been added to the text, and the authors have also corrected the errors that can sometimes creep into a book’s first edition.

Our goal was to create a new edition that would serve as a useful reference book in addition to telling the fascinating story of one of the world’s greatest airships. We hope you enjoy it!

For all the weather nerds out there, here is some zeppelin trivia:  The precursor to the dropsonde was the radiosonde, first deployed by an aircraft during Graf Zeppelin’s Arctic flight of 1931.

The first practical radiosonde was developed by Professor Pavel Alexandrovich Molchanov of the USSR, who traveled on the Graf Zeppelin’s Arctic flight to conduct experiments with his new invention.

As blog readers know I have been in the UK for the past few weeks doing research about the RAF, but I have not been able to resist doing some airship research on the side, especially looking for British information and views on the German commercial zeppelin program.  I found some interesting items that I will post as time allows, including a 1930 memo discussing German views on helium versus hydrogen; diplomatic correspondence about passenger use of cameras aboard Hindenburg; reports of technical visits by British airshipmen to Friedrichshafen; government memoranda regarding zeppelin overflights; and similar items.
