Werner Doehner, the last living survivor of the Hindenburg disaster, died on November 8, 2019 in Laconia, New Hampshire.

Werner was 8 years old when he traveled on Hindenburg with his parents, Hermann and Matilde, his sister Irene (age 14), and his brother Walter (age 10).

Werner, Walter, and their mother survived the crash; Werner’s father and sister did not.

The Doehner family was returning to their home Mexico, where Hermann Doehner was general manager of a German wholesale drug company headquartered in Mexico City. Werner’s older brothers Kurt and Hermann Jr. were not aboard the airship.

Werner Doehner was born on March 14, 1929 in Darmstadt, Germany.

A new, revised, and expanded edition of Zeppelin Hindenburg: An Illustrated History of LZ-129 is now available for pre-order!

This new edition includes additional information, some of which has never been previously published or available to the public, including:

  • A detailed list of every Hindenburg flight with:
    • Verified departure and landing times in local time
    • Flight duration
    • Commander
    • Information about crew and passengers
    • Quantity of post and freight carried
    • Notes about the flight
  • A detailed list of the passengers who were booked on Flight 64, the return flight to Germany that never happened, with biographical information
  • A weight and loading chart from the official Hindenburg flight log
  • Technical details about the ship from a memorandum prepared by a U.S. Navy observer
  • A copy of Hindenburg’s official 1937 Application for Landing Rights in the USA, with information about the ship’s proposed operations for 1937
  • A detailed list of the crew and passengers on the last flight

Other new facts and information have also been added to the text, and the authors have also corrected the errors that can sometimes creep into a book’s first edition.

Our goal was to create a new edition that would serve as a useful reference book in addition to telling the fascinating story of one of the world’s greatest airships. We hope you enjoy it!

In honor of International Women’s Day, a tribute to suffragist Muriel Matters and her “Votes For Women” airship.

"Votes For Women" airship of Muriel Matters

To bring attention to the movement for women’s suffrage, Australian-born Muriel Lilah Matters hired an airship to drop pamphlets over London in 1909 as King Edward VII made his procession through Westminster for the State Opening of Parliament.

Emblazoned with “Votes For Women” on the envelope, and with aeronaut Henry Spencer at the controls and Matters bravely in the basket, the 80-foot airship departed Hendon for Westminster on February 16, 1909.

The underpowered airship was blown off course by adverse winds and never reached Westminster — landing in the branches of a tree in Surrey instead — but Matters achieved her goal of publicity for the cause of women’s suffrage.

On this International Women’s Day, take a moment to listen to this wonderful 1939 BBC interview with the intrepid Muriel Matters.

Zeppelin wrote of his visit to the Fairfax Courthouse to visit the German division in XI Corps under the command of Carl Schurz.

The officers in the photograph are identified as: (left to right) Major Ludlow, Captain Ulric Dahlgren (standing), Lieutenant Colonel Dickinson, Zeppelin, and Lieutenant Rosencranz. The accompanying text notes that “the gentleman in foreign uniform is Count Zeppalin (sic), of the Prussian army, then on a visit to this country.”

Tomorrow I will post another photograph of Count von Zeppelin in the United States. Keep an eye on the blog.  🙂
