Had LZ-129 Hindenburg not been destroyed, her little known sister ship, LZ-130 Graf Zeppelin II, would have come into transatlantic service in October of 1937, while the third, much larger Hindenburg Class Airship, the unnamed LZ-131, was under construction and likely would have entered service by 1939. The planned forth Hindenburg Class Airship, LZ-132, would be constructed and entered into service by 1940-1941.

Even in this best case scenario, however, the Golden Age of Airships, which was already waning by 1937, likely would have ended completely by 1945-1946 at the latest, once jet engine technology was developed and gained widespread use, thus rendering commercial passenger Zeppelins obsolete.

He told us he saw the Hindenburg passing over, would this have been true? I ask the question as recently someone told me it couldn’t have been and I would love to prove that he did.

Crash flight mail is comprehensively catalogued in Dieter Leder’s book “LZ-129 Hindenburg:Zeppelin crash mail.” If it is not in that book, it is not likely to be genuine.

Am I correct in thinking this was carried on the last flight of the Hindenburg?

How it then went to Hong Kong, the next franking on the reverse side with George 5th tamps on both sides-1 on the back,2 up to 3 dollars on the front-not sure the route, maybe Berlin linking with Imperial airways via Brindisi,Cairo,Basra,Bagdad maybe,Karachi then in India then Penang new base, and onto a Chinese enclave in modern Vietnam, then Hong Kong, boat to Manila, then back to USA possibly San Francisco and eventually to Florida.Do you know ?

Hindenburg never moored anywhere in the USA other than Naval Air Station Lakehurst in New Jersey.

Of course I did not know then what it was, just that it was very large and very low.

The U.S. export ban on helium was not specific to Germany; the Helium Control Acts of 1925 and 1927 banned exportation of helium to any foreign country without government approval.
